It is a temporary placement for children who come out of their home of origin for reasons such as: abuse, neglect, domestic violence, delinquency, drugs, or behavioral issues the biological parent is not equipped to handle.
Foster kids in the custody of Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) are referred to agencies like Starlight with a list of criteria and treatment needs. If Starlight has a home that fit the needs of the client, DCFS will place that child with Starlight. We let you know all the information we have about the child and then you will have an opportunity to meet them before so you can determine if it is the right fit for you and them.
Each child has a different situation, length of stay can be 6 months up to 2 years. Some kids are going to be adopted, some will return to their biological families or kin, some will stay in foster care until 18 then be terminated from custody and live independently.
Foster care requires patience and understanding of various lifestyles and upbringing. Many of these youth have been exposed to violence, abuse, drugs and gangs at early an age. They require structure and consistency in order to thrive. Also it is important to be a good communicator and work as a team member to help advocate for the child.
